The Department of Physical Education was organized in 1947 and consisted of five teachers: Pavlovsky Zinovy ​​Evgenievich, Kaplun Mikhail Iosifovich, Prokopovich Feodosiya Matveevna, Nevdoba Alexey Sofronovich. The department was headed by Yakiv Petrovich Serebryanyk. In 1949, the teaching staff doubled and remained virtually unchanged until the early 1970s.

The infrastructure of the sports base of the institute included a gym at the dormitory №1, a shooting range and a summer sports ground, which, in turn, consisted of a two-hundred-meter treadmill, two volleyball and one basketball court, as well as sectors for long jump, high jump and pushing the nucleus.

In 1971, with the direct participation of students, staff and staff of the department on the site of summer playgrounds was built a modern sports complex for physical culture and sports. It includes a swimming pool, games room, specialized gyms, boxing and fencing.

In 1977 the collective of department under the direction of Victor Zakharovich Nikolaev was replenished with professional trainers-teachers on various kinds of sports and made 25 people. During these years, mass sports and health work at the institute was carried out at a high organizational level.

The Department of Physical Education has become one of the best in Odessa. Three times (in 1966, 1970 and 1972) the students of the academy took the first places in the team competition between the universities of Ukraine.

The formation of boxing is primarily associated with the name of General Boris Alexandrovich, wrestling – Borodin Valery Mikhailovich, gymnastics – Rabinovich Lev Davidovich, shooting – Tmenov Alexander Nikolaevich. Thus, in the 1970s, the shooters of the academy were the strongest in the city, constantly taking first or prize places among the universities of Odessa region.

No less fruitful was the work of specialists in volleyball – Verkh Hryhoriy Iosifovych, basketball – Parvadov Leonid Anisymovych, swimming – Kolomiychuk Mykola Ivanovych, weightlifting and weightlifting – Poltaretsky Georgy Mykhailovych. The development of athletics at the institute is associated with the name of Shiker Galina Ivanovna, rhythmic gymnastics – Kosintseva Svetlana Nikolaevna. The OTIHP team named after M.V. Lomonosov has won the championship among Ukrainian universities three times. Druzhby’s material and sports base continues to develop, where training camps of all national teams of the academy in various sports, as well as national teams of universities in Moscow, Voronezh, Chisinau, Vinnytsia, Lviv and others are held.

MV Lomonosov Tukmakov Vladimir Borisovich, Grandmaster of the USSR, International Grandmaster since 1972, Honored Coach of Ukraine. VB Tukmakov is the second Odessa resident after E. Geller to receive the title of international grandmaster. VB Tukmakov as a member of the national team of the Soviet Union was the winner of the World Chess Olympiad in 1984, the European Championship in 1973, 1983 and 1989. He became a silver medalist of the USSR championships three times. Participant in a historic match between the national teams of the USSR and the rest of the world (London, 1984). Winner of more than fifty international tournaments. In 2004 he led the Ukrainian team to the first Olympic gold medals in its history.

From 1980 to 1986 the department was headed by Margarita Efimovna Shulga. During this period, students studied at the department for 4 years with a certain sports specialization and passed the exam in theoretical and practical courses.

From 1986 to 2006 the department was headed by Bohdan Ivanovych Struk, associate professor, candidate of pedagogical sciences, master of sports of the international class in archery. During this period, more attention is paid to research and methodological work, published more than 50 scientific papers, 15 guidelines on physical education, methods of sports training and physical therapy, received 4 copyright certificates.

From 1987 to 1991 the teachers of the department trained: 5 masters of sports, 104 candidates for masters of sports, 363 athletes of the 1st category, 10193 athletes of mass categories, 5903 badges of GPO, 3346 instructors and judges in various sports. This is a considerable merit of the sports club “Technologist”, which was headed by a senior teacher of the department Poltaretsky George Mikhailovich, and later – Popenko Vitaly Ivanovich.

The national team of the university successfully performs in regional, sports student games in 30 sports, and in the overall standings in 1999, 2000, 2002 won prizes among eighteen universities in the region. In the nineties, the students of the academy achieved significant results at international and All-Ukrainian competitions. : student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Serhiy Tregub became a bronze medalist of the 1999 European Championship in shot put, student of the Faculty of Canning and Winemaking Technology Ruslan Glivinsky became the winner of the 4th Universiade of Ukraine in high jump with a result of 221 cm; Dmytro Sharandak, a student of the Faculty of Grain and Grain Products Technology, took the first place in the doubles in table tennis at the 4th Universiade of Ukraine (coach – senior lecturer RA Polyakov), a student of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Oleksiy Makhlay – the 3rd place in fencing at the 4th Universiade Of Ukraine. Andriy Sumets, a student of the Faculty of Engineering and Economics, became a bronze medalist of the 1999 Spartakiad of Ukraine in chess.

In 2002, the national teams of the Academy of Mini-Football and Football became bronze medalists of the regional championship of the region and the All-Ukrainian student competitions (coaches – senior teachers Ulanovsky AM, Maksymchuk BV). The women’s national team of the basketball academy is a multiple winner of the regional university championship.

Impressive sports achievements of students – masters of sports of international class in Thai boxing: Arthur Kishenko – two-time World Champion (2007); Gromchak Dmytro and Prut Dmytro – winners of the Cup of Ukraine (2008); Kostenko Diana – winner of the Championship of Ukraine in Thai boxing, silver and bronze medalist of the Summer Universiade of Ukraine in classical boxing (2009) and the regional Games of karate students (2009) (coach – senior teacher Chervyakov YI).

In 2006, the department was headed by Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor Vadym Mykhailovych Kopa.

The theoretical and practical direction of the department becomes valeological with priority on the development of technologies for the rehabilitation of students and teachers. The office of methodical and research work is organized. A new scientific topic “Metric measurements of student health” has been approved.

In 2009, students of ONAHT: Artem Hitiv, Serhiy Popiv, Dmytro Antonets, Vyacheslav Brynza, Oleksiy Tykhy (coach senior lecturer SI Kolyadyuk) as a part of the student team of Odessa region in basketball became the winners of X student Ukrainian games. Hegai Arnold in 2009 became the champion of Ukraine, winner of the Cup of Ukraine in Thai boxing. In December 2009 in Bangkok, Master of Sports of International Class of Ukraine Hegai Arnold became the World Champion among adults.

Since 2010, the Department of Physical Education and Sports is headed by Tetyana Petrovna Sergeeva, candidate for master of sports in handball, winner of the Ukrainian Championship (1986), winner of the regional competition “Teacher of the Year” (2001). sports and health work. For 5 years more than 90 scientific works have been published, 13 methodical instructions on physical education have been issued.

For the last 5 years the national teams of ONAHT have become winners and prize-winners of regional student games among universities of Odessa: mini-football and football among men’s national teams (coach – Maksimchuk BV), mini-football and football among women’s national teams (coach – Boltomatis DV), volleyball and beach volleyball (coach – Volkova TV, Goncharuk VV), rugby (coach – Boltomatis DV), handball among women’s national teams (coach – Pavlyuk O. V.), handball among men’s national teams (coach – Tsapenko LM), water polo (coach – Vasiliev VP), shot put (coach – Basko AA), chess (coach – Zakhlevskaya TV .).
